Registration Eligibility

This class is designed for students who have some previous introductory experience creating ikebana and are interested in ongoing study through the Sogetsu School of Ikebana curriculum. It is not appropriate for absolute beginners or as a trial class.

Previous experience may include completing an introductory class such as our Introduction to Ikebana class, or equivalent experience studying or practicing ikebana elsewhere.

Students must also have and use the required Sogetsu School of Ikebana textbooks for this class. Textbooks can be purchased directly from the Sogetsu School through their website.

Please make sure you meet these requirements before registering. If you are completely new to ikebana, please start with one of my Introduction to Ikebana classes. You can also email me at connect@wideislandstudio.com if you have any questions about classes that are appropriate for your experience level.

If you register without meeting the requirements, your registration may be cancelled and refunded, minus any payment processing fees.

About the Class

This class supports students in deepening their ikebana practice through the Sogetsu School curriculum. Using the official Sogetsu textbooks as a guide, students progress at their own pace, working on approximately 1–2 arrangements per class. Each 2-hour session combines individual instruction with the opportunity to learn and exchange ideas alongside other students. Come prepared with the materials needed for the lessons you plan to complete.

Preparing for Class & Required Materials

Because you will be progressing through the curriculum at your own pace, you may be working on a different lesson or arrangement than other students. Please review the lessons you plan to complete before class and come prepared with the materials you will need.

Please bring:

  • Required Sogetsu School textbooks;
  • Plant materials needed for the arrangements you plan to work on;
  • Containers needed for the arrangements you plan to work on;
  • Kenzan (pin frog);
  • Hasami (flower scissors);

A classroom set of containers, kenzan, and hasami is also available to borrow during class if needed. Students should plan to bring their own materials and tools whenever possible.

If you do not yet have the required textbooks, please contact me before registering so I can help ensure you are prepared for class.

What to Expect

This is an ongoing Sogetsu study class, not a traditional workshop. Students work through the Sogetsu curriculum at their own pace, choosing lessons based on their experience and progress.

During each 2-hour session, you’ll work on your selected lessons while receiving individual instruction and feedback from Leslie. Students may be working on different lessons and arrangements, creating a shared learning environment while progressing through the curriculum independently.

With a maximum of 7 students, the small group allows for individual attention while providing opportunities to learn from and exchange ideas with other students. Regular attendance is encouraged, but you can attend according to your schedule.

Instructor

This class is led by Leslie Wier-Fincher, a certified ikebana teacher with the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.
